The University of Catania and the Center of Excellence for the Acceleration of Harm Reduction (CoEHAR) are glad to announce the call for applications for the 1st-Level Master on Smoking Cessation and Harm Reduction. The deadline for submitting applications is on February 14, 2022.

New frontiers in treatment and prevention, in Italy and globally, forced the market to create and train health professionals who comprehend how to evaluate the medical and social difficulties created by smoke and recognise it. A sector in great ferment with excellent professional and scientific outlets.

Approaching a smoker who intends to quit requires 360 ° knowledge and skills.  This includes medical principles such as the pathological course of smoking-related illnesses, psychological and psychotherapeutic assistance, pharmacological and therapeutic approaches.

For all these reasons, the University of Catania and CoEHAR, in collaboration with the Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine, are proud to announce the beginning of the selection process for the 1st level University Master in “Smoking Cessation and Harm reduction”, the first of its kind worldwide.

The participants, at the end of the master, will acquire skills to fit into numerous work environments such as medical and rehabilitation centres, clinics, schools, hospitals, research centres. It will also give a greater chance to enter a sector that has seen in the last year a growing demand for specialized workers in medical and psychological support for smokers and smoking cessation programs.

CoEHAR represents international excellence in the sector thanks to the innovative methodological approaches to kick the habit of smoking. Thanks to a team of multidisciplinary researchers, collaboration with international partners and the implementation of international research projects, students will have the opportunity to become part of a global network.

There is an increasing demand internationally for skilled workers who can tackle smoking-related problems. Assisting and helping smokers to quit means knowing how to carefully evaluate tobacco addiction and the consequences that the habit brings with it. We need trained and competent professionals because of that,” underlined prof. Riccardo Polosa, founder of COEHAR and coordinator of the master-

The master will have a duration of 12 months for 30 available positions and includes a 300-hours internship. Besides CoEHAR facilities, it will be possible for the students to follow a practical job environment at the Center for the Prevention and Treatment of Tobacco of the AOU Policlinico “G. Rodolico-S. Marco”; the CTA Villa Chiara psychiatric rehabilitation facility; the non-profit association Italian Anti-Smoking League; and ECLAT Srl, the University spin-off dedicated to research and development in the field of smoke harm reduction.
