SUMMARY:A Fireside Chat – The Impact of Evidence in a Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:The global COVID-19 pandemic is an unprecedented crisis that has required rapid generation of research evidence to improve policy and practice in health\, social care\, and other settings. To meet this need\, the researcher community has been mobilised more rapidly than ever seen before. This has created a difficult environment for policymakers and implementation actors to navigate. Particularly\, as observed in UKCDR and GloPID-R’s COVID-19 Research Project Tracker\, thinly spread global funding has\, in some instances\, resulted in a proliferation of small\, underpowered studies without impact. Tied to this\, historically\, researchers have struggled to disseminate their research to an audience beyond their disciplinary silos and connect to those who can effect change. \nThe pandemic has acted as a watershed moment\, not only in this increased need to produce actionable evidence with clear routes to impact\, but it has also logistically changed the game in how researchers interact with policymakers\, civil society and other implementation actors. Researchers have had to be flexible and adapt their plans to changing restrictions. This has frequently resulted in locally-based researchers in Low- and Middle-Income Country (LMIC) settings taking the lead in dissemination and policy engagement activities.

SUMMARY:How can the illicit drug control field inform the tobacco endgame?
DESCRIPTION:The regulation of tobacco and substances that have traditionally been Illicit (e.g.\, cannabis) are heading in opposite directions with tobacco policies heading toward sales bans\, while many jurisdictions have moved to legalise cannabis. This convergence in control approaches offers opportunities for policy researchers to learn from the illicit drug policy field in reforming the regulation of tobacco. This includes issues related to the illicit tobacco market and also new models of supply that are more restrictive than the current options for tobacco products.

SUMMARY:E-cigarettes and Smoking: Correlation\, Causation\, and Selection Bias
DESCRIPTION:Some public health officials\, including those in Korea\, discourage smokers from using electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) because ENDS use is positively correlated with smoking in cross-sectional surveys. From the observed correlation such officials deduce that ENDS causally discourage cessation from tobacco. However\, use of ENDS is a choice made by individuals\, and that choice is highly likely to be correlated with unobserved factors related to smoking behavior. Ignoring this issue of sample selection leads to bias in estimates of the causal effect of ENDS use on smoking. This study investigates this correlation\, selection bias\, and the causal effect of ENDS use on cessation with several econometric models designed to estimate causal effects from cross-sectional\, observational data. Direct and indirect evidence supports the hypotheses that there are 1) selection bias and 2) a causal effect leading from ENDS use to a higher probability of cessation.

SUMMARY:56TH ANNUAL SCIENTIFIC MEETING
DESCRIPTION:Dear Friends\, Colleagues and ESCI members\, \nBecause of pandemia\, we totally changed our behaviors and learned how to interacted with each other by using technology in Scientific and personal communication. We got new ideas as researchers while on worldwide lockdown. We now see now the light at the end of the tunnel and\, on behalf of the European Society for Clinical Investigation (ESCI)\, I warmly invite you to attend the 54th Annual Scientific Meeting\, to be held in Bari\, Italy\, June 8-10\, 2022. This will be the second time that the conference will take place in Bari\, a city with an important University campus. Bari has thousands of years of history\, overlooking the Adriatic Sea in the Apulia Region\, the beating heart of the Mediterranean Europe with superb people\, culture\, heritage\, and food. \nFrom the past years\, ESCI has been committed to update our knowledge\, to share expertise by merging clinicians and basic researchers across Europe\, working in the multidisciplinary field of biomedical research. No matter how bad the situation has been\, we are coming back stronger in the post-COVID era\, with great responsibility. \nThe congress will focus on “BRIDGING GAPS BETWEEN AGING\, TRANSLATIONAL\, AND TRANSITIONAL RESEARCH” hosting top speakers\, sound research groups\, merging basic\, translational and clinical research\, organizing symposia and pre-meeting courses\, oral presentations and poster sessions. Going back “to the future” allowing hundreds of young investigators to meet\, discuss\, challenge each other\, and share novel experiences in a beautiful environment. \nI am sure you will consider being part of this large international scientific community by active participation\, promoting new ideas and collaborations. ESCI will continue to support\, encourage excellent\, honest\, highly innovative and sound clinical science through collaborations and mobility of young investigators across Europe and worldwide. \nI look forward to seeing you in a splendid location\, Bari 2022 – ESCI is waiting for you! \nPiero Portincasa\nLocal organizer\nPast-President ESCI\nPresident Trust\, ESCI

SUMMARY:Following the science: using the best available evidence to assess the health risks of nicotine products.
DESCRIPTION:Nicotine products have undergone numerous developments in the last half a century. Many alternatives to traditional combustible tobacco products have been introduced to consumers\, most of which were developed to reduce harms associated with traditional products. As these products become increasingly popular with consumers\, it is important to continuously assess their efficacy and safety with the goal of minimising harm. In this webinar\, we will present our approach to objectively and methodologically identifying and analysing the best available evidence. We will explore what the current evidence tells us about the relative harms of the full spectrum of nicotine products\, from combustible cigarettes to nicotine replacement therapies. Drawing on other examples of harm reduction\, we will discuss the importance of taking a pragmatic approach to public health issues to obtain better outcomes.
