DESCRIPTION:For over a decade we have been living in a state of global crisis that affects all citizens\, all social spheres\, the entire psychophysical sphere of each one and the entire planet. Essentially\, the root cause is to be identified in a widespread attitude of indifference towards the Balance of the Ecosystem and the Safety of Man and the Planet\, underestimating the importance that\, instead\, these factors assume on maintaining the state of Health of the individual and the community. \nIn the “Glossary of the Ministry of Health” a significant definition of “Patient Safety” can be identified: “Dimension of the quality of health care\, which guarantees\, through the identification\, analysis and management of risks and possible incidents for patients\, the design and implementation of operational systems and processes that minimize the likelihood of error\, potential risks and possible consequent damage to patients”. \nFurthermore\, WHO – World Health Organization – in the Shanghai Declaration\, 2016\, stated: “Health develops in the contexts of daily life\, in neighborhoods and communities where people live\, work\, love\, shop and have fun. Health is one of the most effective and powerful indicators of sustainable development and success of every city (and community)\, and contributes to making cities (and communities) inclusive\, safe\, and resilient for the entire populationaliero-Universitaria “Policlinico-V. Emanuele” di Catania. \nHealth is therefore our most precious asset and it is up to all of us to protect it as best we can\, becoming aware of the negative impact that choices\, habits and incorrect lifestyles have on it. DESCRIPTION:Are you as excited for #GFN23 as we are? As preparations for this year’s conference in Warsaw (21 – 24 June) intensify\, we have a couple of important announcements to make. We know that you’ve been hotly anticipating who will be speaking at #GFN23 – well\, without further ado\, we are very happy to announce our keynote speakers and the Michael Russell Orator for this year’s conference! \nTo start things off\, we are pleased to welcome Sarah Cooney as our first keynote speaker of #GFN23\, who will be delving into “The politics of scientific publishing”. Sarah Cooney is a science engagement specialist focusing on harm reduction and science communication\, now running her own consultancy based in the UK. In her earlier career\, Sarah held various editorial and publishing roles at leading peer-reviewed journals including Nature\, Elsevier and BioMedCentral. She then spent nearly 12 years at British American Tobacco\, establishing the company’s science engagement and communication capability to share the science behind less-risky nicotine products. With a BSc in genetics and an MSc in plant genetics\, Sarah’s own research has been published in the internationally-renowned journal\, Science. \nOur second keynote speaker\, Paul Newhouse\, M.D.\, will address “The role of nicotinic systems in brain disorders”. Dr Newhouse holds the Jim Turner Chair in Cognitive Disorders at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine\, Nashville\, US\, where he is Professor of Psychiatry\, Pharmacology\, and Medicine. His research has focused on brain cholinergic mechanisms in cognitive ageing and the role of nicotinic cholinergic receptor systems in normal and impaired cognitive functioning in humans. Dr Newhouse’s work established the importance of brain nicotinic cholinergic receptor systems in normal cognitive processes and established these receptors as a therapeutic target in Alzheimer’s disease and related conditions. \nAnd finally\, Dr Roberto Sussman will be giving this year’s Michael Russell Oration! Dr Sussman is a full-time senior researcher and lecturer at the Institute for Nuclear Sciences of the National University of Mexico. His main research areas are General Relativity and Cosmology\, but he has conducted research in other areas of Physics\, including peer reviewed publications on e-cigarette aerosols. Dr Sussman is also Founder and Director of Pro-Vapeo Mexico\, an association representing Mexican consumers of noncombustible nicotine products\, and is actively advocating for an appropriate regulation of these products in Mexico. He directs and supervises the effort to spread scientific information about safer nicotine products and advises consumers on countering the misinformation and prejudice about them that is common throughout Latin America. Dr Sussman’s oration\, entitled “A rigorous critical evaluation of tobacco and nicotine science”\, looks to explore this theme in much-anticipated detail. \nGFN FIVES – GET INVOLVED! \nWe know that many of you reading this have been hard at work with a vast array of THR-related projects this past year. SUMMARY:Between risk\, prevention\, diagnosis\, and therapies for dyslipidemias
DESCRIPTION:High cholesterol is one of the leading risk factors for cardiovascular disease\, as evidenced by multiple epidemiological and intervention studies that have shown a near-linear relationship between this dyslipidemia\, morbidity\, and cardiovascular mortality. \nAfter the forced break due to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic\, it is appropriate to return to discussing “non-communicable chronic diseases” whose health risks have continued to accumulate in the last 3 years. \nThe conference aims to bring attention to the diagnosis and management of hypercholesterolemia in light of the latest guidelines produced by the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and the European Atherosclerosis Society (EAS). \nInnovative topics such as environmental risk factors\, including smoking and their role in the progression of atherosclerosis\, will be addressed. Diagnostic ultrasound for patients with hypercholesterolemia (with a particular focus on carotid Doppler) and innovative pharmacological approaches that include PCSK9 inhibitors and bempedoic acid\, drugs that have made new intervention possibilities possible in patients at high and very high cardiovascular risk\, will be discussed. Hypercholesterolemia familial\, a hereditary disease in which a genetic alteration causes extremely high levels of LDL cholesterol that correlate with the high risk of cardiac events in carriers\, will also be discussed. \nThe final session proposes non-pharmacological suggestions for the management of cardiovascular risk\, including lifestyle\, physical activity\, nutraceuticals\, and nutrition\, and in particular\, the Mediterranean diet as a lifestyle that originates in our territory that should be adopted and exported\, physical activity that brings us back in contact with the environment and also has an ecological meaning\, and the potential role of nutraceuticals.

The use of rolled tobacco is also known to have been practiced in the Yucatan Peninsula and the word “sikar” may be the origin of the English words “cigar” and “cigarettes”. \nThe mission of CORESTA is to promote and facilitate international cooperation and best practices in scientific research relative to tobacco and its derived products. Its vision is to be recognised as an authoritative source of publicly available\, credible science and best practices. \nThe AP2023 Conference is being organised by CORESTA and follows on from the SSPT2023 Conference organised by Mother Murphy’s Laboratories. \nThe objective of the CORESTA AP2023 Conference is to provide the scientific community with opportunities for discussions with international specialists leading to fruitful collaborations\, and multiple occasions for interactions and networking.
