SUMMARY:E-cigarettes and Smoking: Correlation\, Causation\, and Selection Bias
DESCRIPTION:Some public health officials\, including those in Korea\, discourage smokers from using electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) because ENDS use is positively correlated with smoking in cross-sectional surveys. From the observed correlation such officials deduce that ENDS causally discourage cessation from tobacco. However\, use of ENDS is a choice made by individuals\, and that choice is highly likely to be correlated with unobserved factors related to smoking behavior. Ignoring this issue of sample selection leads to bias in estimates of the causal effect of ENDS use on smoking. This study investigates this correlation\, selection bias\, and the causal effect of ENDS use on cessation with several econometric models designed to estimate causal effects from cross-sectional\, observational data. Direct and indirect evidence supports the hypotheses that there are 1) selection bias and 2) a causal effect leading from ENDS use to a higher probability of cessation.

DESCRIPTION:Nicotine products have undergone numerous developments in the last half a century. Many alternatives to traditional combustible tobacco products have been introduced to consumers\, most of which were developed to reduce harms associated with traditional products. As these products become increasingly popular with consumers\, it is important to continuously assess their efficacy and safety with the goal of minimising harm. In this webinar\, we will present our approach to objectively and methodologically identifying and analysing the best available evidence. We will explore what the current evidence tells us about the relative harms of the full spectrum of nicotine products\, from combustible cigarettes to nicotine replacement therapies. Drawing on other examples of harm reduction\, we will discuss the importance of taking a pragmatic approach to public health issues to obtain better outcomes.

DESCRIPTION:Overview of vaping\, prevalence of use\, toxicology & safety\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nIn this presentation\, “The New Look of Nicotine Addiction” \, participants will receive an overview of vaping 101\, the prevalence of use\, toxicology and safety\, secondary exposure cessation and harm reduction as well as youth use and risks. What does new research tell us about youth vaping and COVID-19? With almost 1 in 4 Ohio high school students using a vaping product and the FDA identifying vaping as an epidemic\, what should you and your community know about vaping and Juuling? \n  \nParticipants will: \n• understand the history\, growth and iterations of the electronic cigarette \n• be able to identify common myths about the electronic cigarette \n• be able to identify health risks of using electronic cigarettes \n• be able to identify best practice vape prevention tools as well as alternative to suspension interventions. \n  \nCEUs \nMontgomery County Alcohol\, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services has been approved by the Ohio Counselor\, Social Worker and Marriage and Family Therapist Board to offer continuing education credit hours to Counselors and Social Workers (Provider #RCS111304) and the Ohio Chemical Dependency Professionals Board to offer recognized clock hours to Chemical Dependency Counselors and Prevention Professionals (Provider #50-17863) and has approved this training for 1.5 hours of CEUs. \nIn order to ethically provide CEUs\, we use a platform that generates attendance time reports. We must have a total time in attendance for each participant in order to issue CEUs and the CEUs issued are based on the total amount of time accumulated between the time an attendee joins and the time the attendee logs off. We are ethically bound to report the accumulated amount of time a participant attended\, therefore we cannot issue CEUs to: \n\nIndividuals sharing a monitor\, computer\, and/or login\nIndividuals joining by audio phone only\nIndividuals missing more than 10 minutes of a training that is 60 minutes in length\n\nCEUs will be adjusted to the nearest quarter hour to reflect the amount of time present for sessions over 60 minutes in length. \nThis session will not be recorded. Yet women and girls continue to be excluded from participating fully in science. \nIn order to achieve full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls\, and further achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls\, the United Nations General Assembly declared 11 February as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science in 2015.

DESCRIPTION:Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Center for Tobacco Products (CTP) is holding a public webinar titled “FDA’s Rulemaking Process and Planned Tobacco Product Standards to Prohibit Menthol as a Characterizing Flavor in Cigarettes and Flavors in Cigars.” In April 2021\, FDA announced plans to advance two tobacco product standards within the next year: one to prohibit menthol as a characterizing flavor in cigarettes and another to prohibit all characterizing flavors\, except tobacco\, in cigars. The webinar will provide an overview of the following: \nFDA’s planned tobacco product standards and why they matter to public health\nFDA’s rulemaking process and how stakeholders can participate\nInformation about cessation resources and tools\nFDA experts will also answer some of the most commonly submitted stakeholder questions. Please note FDA will respond only to questions submitted by February 4. DESCRIPTION:The UK E-Cigarette Summit which will take place virtually on 7-8 December 2021 and hope that the Virtual Summit will provide a welcoming focal point to grapple with the challenging questions posed by  e-cigarettes and new novel nicotine products. \nFor decades\, the known harms from smoking and combustible products has aligned public health and tobacco control communities to a common goal. However\, the emergence of e-cigarettes and novel nicotine products has created clear divisions within the both the scientific and policy communities. At the same time governments have a pressing demand to interpret conflicting evidence in to appropriate legal and regulatory frameworks. \nThe E-Cigarette Summit has a single aim of facilitating respectful dialogue and thoughtful analysis from global experts to explore the evidence and discuss how this should be interpreted to deliver the most effective health strategies to reduce smoking related death and disease. We hope that you can join us in December. \nTo help with challenging schedules and different time zones\, speaker presentations will be pre-recorded and available to view on the virtual platform from Tuesday 30 November (5pm GMT). You will have to have registered to gain access.
