The University of Catania and CoEHAR bring to Latvia the third edition of the international conference “Type 2 Diabetes in Internal Medicine Practice – Experience Sharings 3”, a key scientific event aimed at advancing clinical knowledge and fostering international collaboration in the management of type 2 diabetes.
Hosted at the Pullman Old Town Hotel in Riga (Latvia) on 6th and 7th June 2026, and organized in collaboration with the Internal Medicine Specialists Association (DAHUDER) in Turkey, the conference will gather leading experts in internal medicine, endocrinology, and metabolic diseases. Among the distinguished speakers are Prof. Riccardo Polosa (CoEHAR Founder), Prof. Giovanni Li Volti (CoEHAR Director), Prof. Hamit Yıldız, Prof. Teslime Ayaz, highlighting the strong international network promoted by the organizing institutions.
The scientific programme will address major clinical challenges in diabetes care, including hypoglycemia, glucotoxicity, cardiovascular protection, and the role of early combination treatments. The agenda will also explore innovative therapeutic strategies and real-world evidence, such as the effectiveness of SGLT2 inhibitors and the role of lipoic acid in metabolic syndrome.
A dedicated lecture by Prof. Polosa will focus on the management of patients with type 2 diabetes who smoke, underlining the importance of tailored clinical approaches and the potential contribution of harm reduction strategies in improving patient outcomes. In addition, Prof. Giovanni Li Volti will present on the role of lipoic acid in metabolic syndrome, providing insights into emerging biochemical approaches and their potential impact on the management of complex metabolic conditions.
The two-day programme will include interactive clinical case discussions, offering participants practical insights and opportunities for direct exchange with experts. By bridging scientific evidence and everyday clinical practice, the conference aims to support healthcare professionals in improving patient care and long-term outcomes.
“Events like this represent a unique opportunity to share scientific knowledge and strengthen international collaboration in areas of high clinical relevance such as diabetes,” said Prof. Riccardo Polosa. “Integrating harm reduction principles into clinical practice is increasingly important, especially when addressing modifiable risk factors such as smoking in patients with chronic diseases.”
“Bringing together experts from different countries allows us to integrate diverse perspectives and accelerate innovation in metabolic research,” added Prof. Giovanni Li Volti. “International scientific cooperation also plays a crucial role in exploring new strategies, including harm reduction approaches, to better manage complex and multifactorial conditions.”
Through this initiative, the University of Catania and CoEHAR reaffirm their commitment to international scientific cooperation and to the development of innovative, evidence-based approaches in chronic disease management.
