CoEHAR and DAHUDER (Internal Medicine Specialists Association in Turkey) continue their commitment to advancing metabolic research and international medical education with the fifth edition of the “Type 2 Diabetes in Internal Medicine Practice – Experience Sharings” meeting, to be held at the Pullman Old Town Hotel in Riga on 26–27 September 2026.

Following four successful editions, the meeting has become an established forum where clinicians and researchers share the latest evidence and discuss practical approaches to improving the care of people living with type 2 diabetes.

This edition’s scientific programme covers major advances in diabetes care, including innovative glucose-lowering therapies, cardiovascular protection, hypoglycaemia, glucotoxicity and individualized treatment through interactive case discussions. Among the invited speakers, Dr. Walter Currenti and Dr. Roberto Curto, both from the University of Catania, will contribute with lectures on two important areas of clinical practice. Dr. Currenti will present “Metabolic and Nutritional Changes after Quitting Smoking,” highlighting the metabolic adaptations associated with smoking cessation and their implications for patients with type 2 diabetes. Dr. Curto will discuss “Redefining Diabetes Care: Role of Novel Glucose-Lowering Drugs in Type 2 Diabetes,” focusing on the evolving therapeutic landscape and the integration of innovative pharmacological approaches into routine care.

Strengthening international collaboration

The conference further reinforces the collaboration between CoEHAR, DAHUDER, the University of Catania, and an expanding international network of clinicians and researchers working to improve diabetes care.

The inclusion of a dedicated lecture on the metabolic consequences of smoking cessation reflects CoEHAR’s ongoing commitment to investigating the relationship between smoking, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. By bringing together experts in internal medicine, diabetology and public health, the fifth Experience Sharings meeting aims to promote multidisciplinary collaboration and support the translation of scientific evidence into better patient care.

“International collaboration and continuous medical education are essential to addressing the growing burden of diabetes worldwide,” said Professor Riccardo Polosa, founder of CoEHAR. “Meetings like Experience Sharings create valuable opportunities to exchange knowledge, discuss emerging evidence, and strengthen collaborations that ultimately benefit patients.”
