Another well-deserved international recognition for CoEHAR: the APP developed for the FOOD Rec project was awarded under the category Application of ​​IMPROVE, the international conference on image processing and vision engineering.

Catania, May 4, 2021 – Another prestigious international recognition for CoEHAR, Center of Excellence for the acceleration of Harm Reduction of the University of Catania. The APP developed for the Food Rec project, which analyzes habits food of smokers, won the award under the category Applications by IMPROVE, an international conference dedicated to image processing and practical applications in the digital environment.

I am proud the Food Rec project achieved such an important international milestone. The field of digital application of image detection is constantly growing in a way that supports the process to collect the data essential in the understanding of harmful habits and attitudes such as smoking” says Prof. Sebastiano Battiato, the project leader of FOOD Rec and Professor of Computer science at the University of Catania.

Developing applications that can help smokers in daily routine will help us to implement smoking cessation strategies and processes, contributing to the fight against smoking” he added.

FOOD RECOGNITION 

The research project aims to develop a digital system for recognizing and analyzing smokers’ eating habits, analyzing any correlations with the smoking cessation process.

Computer vision techniques help in recognizing the varieties of food and quantities consumed, correlating these data with the analysis of the number and frequency of meals, the amount of time spent eating and, overall, all ritualistic behaviours related to smoking and food.

IMPROVE

IMPROVE is a conference focused on image processing techniques, computer vision and its practical applications. The conference brings together scientists and professionals working on the development of new technologies and innovative solutions in the field of image processing and computer vision.
